Puberty rites is a cultural practice where ladies who are of age go through rites to be initiated into womanhood. In Ghana, every tribe has it’s own puberty rites and the series of tradition young women go through to be recognized as complete women. Sadly, the practice is dying out.
To prove her virtue as a “complete woman”, popular media personality, Korkor Larteley Addardey best known as Berla Mundi has shared photos of her going through puberty rites of the Ga people.

In Ga, puberty rites is called “Otofo” and Berla Mundi wearing only a white cloth around her chest and waist with many beads around her waist and neck was dancing to the delight of everyone gathered.
In other photos, others who were going through the rites were completely topless showing their breast to the world to prove they are indeed of age to be called women.
Berla Mundi revealed she went through the rites 9 years ago when she was also competing for the Miss Malaika 2010
Sharing the stunning photos which have caused a stir on social media, Berla Mundi wrote:
9 years ago!!!! When I was still hustling for a car. I performed the ‘Otofo’, which is a type of puberty rite performed by the Ga people of Ghana to initiate teenage girls into womanhood.
#missmalaikaghana2010 • Let’s rep our culture today. Where are you from and what’s your local name? • I’m from the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. My local name is Korkor Larteley Addardey. •
In the olden days, young ladies who get pregnant without going through the puberty rites become an outcast and are driven away from the community. Now, the process is almost inexistence in any Ghanaian community.
